Student Tutoring
We offer small-group (3-6 students) and private tutoring for students in reading, math, critical thinking, and logic. Whether your child needs remedial help, standard review, or enrichment, our courses provide a solid foundation with incremental skill-building.
Subjects
Reading
The grade-level content includes explicit and systematic instruction in phonemic and phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, and phonics skills such as blending and segmenting words to read and write them. Reading, writing, grammar, punctuation skills, and concepts for each grade level are based on what students are expected to know. Exercises also develop critical thinking, vocabulary, and other skills and concepts. Lessons include easy-to-follow explanations, examples, and charts for visual learners. They are followed by a variety of fun, colorful, mind-building activities using different genres. Mastering these skills will allow your child to experience the joy of reading as they build independence, confidence, and fluency. This opens the door to a lifelong journey of exploring rich literature with depth and ease.
Mathematics
The math curriculum is written according to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards. Based on grade level, lessons contain a warm-up with facts practice, mental math, & problem-solving exercises, an introduction to the new concept, lesson practice exercises where the new skill is practiced, and mixed practice exercises. Lessons emphasize problem-solving and computation to build for success in higher-level math and math assessments. Every lesson is followed by various fun, colorful activities to ensure concept mastery. The lessons and activities spiral slowly, allowing students to become comfortable with concepts while challenging them to continue building their problem-solving skills. Lessns cover more than mathematical concepts. Lessons also include mathematical reasoning, so students learn to devise different strategies to solve a wide variety of math problems.
Critical Thinking & Logic
Critical thinking and logic develop deep analytical skills, which enhance comprehension of the presented material, resulting in greater engagement and retention. This creates a lifelong learner equipped to understand, master, and apply new information at any time. Based on grade level, lessons are developmentally sequenced with each skill classifying first in the semi-concrete and figural-spatial form. Students also learn important academic vocabulary, concepts, and skills as they analyze relationships between objects, between words, and between objects and words. The cognitive skills developed are prevalent in academic disciplines and are frequently tested in objective tests. Improved school performance is an essential goal of thinking skills instruction, with many variations of each thinking skill promoted in the activities. Thinking skills are sequenced in the order in which a child develops intellectually.
A child first learns to observe and describe objects, recognize their characteristics, and distinguish similarities and differences between them. Describing, comparing, and contrasting skills are necessary for a child's ability to put things in order, group items by class, and think analogically. These processes help students develop superior thinking and communication skills, leading to deeper content learning in all subjects. Lessons include math and language integration techniques to teach thinking skills. They are designed to improve students' observation and description skills and help them conceptualize the mathematics, social studies, and science concepts taught in each grade, with focus on:
Observing, recognizing, and describing characteristics
Distinguishing similarities and differences
Identifying and completing sequences, classifications, and analogies
Stimulate vocabulary development
Clarify thinking processes that underlie content learning
Cursive Writing
Cursive writing is taught at all levels and incorporated into reading/writing lessons and critical thinking. CursiveLogic teaches the essential structure of the cursive alphabet. The instruction method has two key features: four basic shapes comprise the entire lowercase alphabet. Teaching similarly shaped letters in one lesson streamlines and shortens the learning process, rather than teaching letters one at a time. CursiveLogic teaches all the letters that share a common shape as a connected string. Writing similar letters as a connected string allows proper formation of each letter to reinforce the proper formation of every other letter in the string. Learning the letters in strings also means students write cursive from the beginning. Students never write disconnected letters in CursiveLogic. CursiveLogic engages every learning style by seamlessly combining visual, auditory, verbal, and kinesthetic elements, making it possible for every student to succeed and enjoy the process through:
Color - Each shape category has a theme color that aids learning and reinforce memory. Bright orange, lime green, silver, and mauve capture students' attention. Using colored pencils and pens can add even more to the learning and the fun.
Catch Phrase - Each shape category has a "catch phrase," which is a verbal cue that students repeat while forming the letter strings. Verbal task analysis, or speaking out an action while performing it manually, solidifies muscle memory. It also provides a mnemonic to associate with each letter. Students repeat the catch phrases any time they need help forming a letter.
Movement - CursiveLogic applies the fundamental principle of muscle memory. Finger tracing exercises and gross motor activities support students in internalizing the correct formation of the four basic Cursive Logic shapes and letter strings.
Logic - CursiveLogic shows students the big picture in a way they can easily understand. When the system "clicks," cursive letters no longer seem random. Students "get it" and feel empowered.
Real Words — Because CursiveLogic teaches six connected letters in the first lesson, students can write real words in cursive at the end of just one week. Immediate payoff is exciting and motivating! Cursive no longer feels like a daunting or frustrating task. Instead, cursive engenders confidence and feelings of success!
